Circle of Security Parenting

At times all parents feel lost or confused about what their child might need from them. Imagine what it might feel like if you were able to make better sense of what your child was really asking from you. The Circle of Security Parenting™ program is based on decades of research about how secure parent-child relationships can be supported and strengthened. Delivered as a structured 8-week program in small groups of between 4-6 participants, everyone has the space and time to reflect on and share their insights.

Providing a safe reflective space for parents and caregivers to understand their beliefs and responses as a child circulates between their need for exploration and their need for safety. As an early intervention program, the content has been tailored for parents and/or caregivers who have children between the ages of 6-months and 6 years.

Learning Objectives of the Program:

  • Understand your child’s emotional world by learning to read the emotional needs
  • Support your child’s ability to successfully manage emotions
  • Enhance the development of your child’s self esteem
  • Honor your innate wisdom and desire for your child to be secure
Unlike some parenting groups, Circle of Security Parenting is not a skills based or teaching program. The aim is to provide a safe reflective space for parents and caregivers to understand their beliefs and responses as a child circulates between their need for exploration and their need for safety. As an early intervention program, the content has been tailored for parents and/or caregivers who have children between the ages of 6-months and 6 years. This being said, all children irrespective of their age, require a safe and secure base to move between exploration and safety as the joys and challenges of life confront them. The concepts covered in the COSP program can therefore be generalised to any age. The beautiful thing about this is that it is never too late to reflect on and learn new ways to being available for children of all ages.

About the facilitator:

Sarah Campbell is a clinical psychologist who has spent over a decade working with complex and severe mental health and behavioural difficulties. This work really highlighted the complexities of the human condition and some of the harmful and protective factors that can influence a persons trajectory. Overwhelmingly, she saw the detrimental impacts of early traumatic experiences on social, emotional, cognitive and spiritual development. The COSP framework therefore spoke to her as a well researched and beautifully packaged program for all parents and caregivers who wanted to reflect on their feelings and reactions to children as they exist in the world. Wanting to be more influential in the formative years of the parent-child relationship, Sarah is now facilitating these workshops to small groups of curious parents. She particularly likes the non-prescriptive approach of COSP, allowing parents to be authentic and responsive to their beliefs, culture and backgrounds.
