Cognitive & Neurodivergent Assessments
Cognitive assessments or intelligence tests are a formal way of assessing a person’s individual strengths and difficulties. As Psychologist’s, we have a range of different measures and assessments that we will often use. They are all based on psychological theory and research to ensure they are both valid and reliable instruments. ADHD and Autism assessments do not have to include a cognitive assessment. Instead, interviews and other questionnaires or observations are used to better understand how a person relates to themselves, their environment and those around them.
What to expect from ADHD or Autism Assessments
We use the term neurodivergent as a way of describing people who learn, think and behave slightly differently to those who might be considered more “typical.” People who commonly fit into the neurodivergent category are those who have traits of, or have been diagnosed with, Autism (ASD), Attention Deficit and/or Hyperactivity (ADHD), Dyslexia, Dyspraxia, and other learning differences. Identifying neurodivergent traits and profiles has become much more popular over the past decade, and this has contributed to a better understanding of the unique and different ways we all exist and interpret ourselves and the world around us. ADHD and Autism Assessments are therefore quite lengthy and include both the client and the observations of family members, teachers, and other important people.
The benefits
The benefits of Identifying neurodivergent traits and profiles include deepening our understanding of differences, reducing stigma, accommodating for different learning and social styles, and embracing the strengths of those approaching tasks and interactions in a unique way. There are also some concerns that we have become overly focused on these profiles leading to the over diagnosis and treatment of such experiences. Ascending Psychology is therefore committed to being as objective, thorough and curious about each individual to ensure that any label or narrative will be most beneficial for them as they navigate the future.
Cognitive assessments
Cognitive assessments or intelligence tests on the other hand are a formal way of assessing a person’s individual strengths and difficulties. As Psychologist’s, we have a range of different measures and assessments that we will often use. They are all based on psychological theory and research to ensure they are both valid and reliable instruments. Often, those who are seeking an assessment for neurodivergent conditions will need to complete a cognitive assessment too as there are often indications in the profiles that are more common in those who are on the Autism Spectrum (ASD) or Attention Deficit and/or Hyperactive (ADHD).
How much does it cost?
The fees for our assessments are located under the ‘Fee Structure’ tab on our website.
If you are referred by a health professional, the fee will depend on whether a cognitive and/or diagnostic assessment has been requested. If you are unsure whether you need a cognitive assessment, please discuss this with the psychologist during the intake assessment.
Typically, clients referred for diagnostic assessments will be seen for up to five hours over three sessions. The assessment is structured accordingly:
- Intake Assessment (50 minutes)
- Formal Testing (including pen and paper assessments and online questionnaires)
- Interviews with relevant others (if necessary)
- Report writing and preparation
- Feedback Session (50 minutes)

If your child is under 13 years of age and has been referred by a pediatrician or psychiatrist for an assessment relating to autism or any other pervasive developmental disorder, then you may be eligible for a total of 4 Medicare rebates worth $89.65. To be eligible for this, we would require a referral letter from either of those professionals to process this on your behalf.
*Occasionally, the Psychologist may recommend that other tests and measures be used in addition to our standard package. If this is the case, you will be notified before the assessment starts and if additional costs will be incurred. We will ensure that you are provided with a comprehensive quote that will need to be approved this if it the case. Payment is required in full before the report is released by the Psychologist. We have a range of payment options available if this is something that you would like to discuss with our friendly team.
